Cognitive semantics

Résumé

In a cognitive approach to language, meaning is considered as being at the heart of all parts of the grammar; in other words, all linguistic (i.e., symbolic) units are considered as meaningful. This chapter first give a general description of such view and subsequently considers how meaning is at work at several levels in the grammar, ranging from morphology, lexical semantics, to syntactic constructions. Some of the notions that will be briefly discussed are Frames and Idealised Cognitive Models, image schemas, schematicity, salience and prototypes, and metaphor and metonymy, lexical and constructional polysemy, and conceptual semantics and its relation to linguistic relativity.
