La télévision sur le téléphone portable : aménagements interactionnels et normativité en action

Abstract : The aim of our research project is to analyse the uses of television on the mobile phone in the city of Rennes, in France and in the city of Timisoara, in Romania. In this research, the uses of television on the mobile phone are studied in their relation to the contexts and situations to which they are adjusted. The comparative approach between France and Romania allows us to include in the analysis the "anthropological dimension" of these uses. This article aims to analyse the influence of social environment on the uses of television on mobile phones in public places : How these uses are they in-formed by social norms ? How people integrate their uses of television on mobile phones in their pre-existing socio-cultural environment? What tensions, new standards and new deviations emerge with this new socio-technical system? We specify that by " institutional Environment " we understand "a stable environment of thoughts, conceptions, representations and meanings which are those of no one; it's about the " objective spirit "whose supports are the practices, habits, customs, and institutions (...) of a society "(from de Fornel, and Quéré, 1999, p. 28). This includes standards and social norms holds for fair, beliefs and representations. (Quéré, 1982, p. 83). To explore these issues and examine the social situations in which communication occurs, we were inspired by a Palo-Alto Method described by Bateson and Ruesch (1988, p. 312). We included several aspects in the analysis: - the perception of the perception of the other; -The position of each participant and his status as observer or reporter; - the identification of rules and roles in this situation. These directions of analysis allowed us to explore the practical conditions of use of television on mobile phones in public. Our analysis in based on the video recordings of the uses in public transport. The recording device articulates two views and combines a pair of glasses-camera (subjective camera worn by the users) and another camera that films the interaction with the system from a wider point of view. Based on this methodology, our approach try to identify the influence of the institutional environment, therefore, seen as a set of standards for the behaviour and try to analyse the operations and procedures by which this environment is maintained and renewed, in and for the action. Two types of confrontations will be subject to analysis in this article. On a horizontal axis, we shall examine the negotiations set by the user of television on the mobile phone in a situation of co-presence: how does he negotiate his meeting with the Other? What strategies and interactional arrangements does he build? Uses in the public will be discussed by focusing on ways users participate to the social coordination. On a vertical axis, we shall examine the confrontations with the inherited practices and norms as they occur in situations of use in public space. By focusing our analysis on the "manners" - the ritual performance of users in a situation - we will show that the new anthropological norms settle into a pre-normalized and pre-formed world. Our analysis shows that television on the mobile phone is accompanied by the emergence of new norms and new deviations. It is appropriate then to consider the question of " the inexhaustible multiplicity of reality in its creation of new " (Noyer, 2006), the infinite changes - creations, deinstitutionalizations - re-institutionalizations (Castoriadis). What makes and allows the new social norms and forms to continuously emerge?Without claiming having the answer, we hypothesize that it is our "organizational competence" (Garfinkel, 2007), which makes us able to constantly invent new social norms. But what will be chosen as the new social accepted use of television on mobile phones in the city of Rennes, in France will not be suitable for the city of Timisoara in Romania. This paper aims to show that the understanding of emerging uses of mobile ICT in the public requires to go beyond conventional approaches, and to integrate a more pragmatic perspective: the practices and choices between different types of cultural practices are closely articulated to situations and resources presents in socially constructed environments, which configure this uses. Compared to traditional models of media use, our approach extends the skills of the user. As a user- acting in a situation, the skills of the user are not only technical skills but also communication skills. These skills are related to the situation and the context of use where collective and individual conventions are formed.
