L’expérience corporelle du vieillissement

Abstract : This paper deals with the body experience of ageing through research conducted with people respectively in their 50s and 60s and over 75 years old. First, it aims to establish which are, for ageing persons, the signs of their own ageing, and it distinguishes between three dimensions of the body experience : the organic body, the appearance and the energy, which are respectively relative to health, beauty and form. Then, it analyses the practical and symbolic work that people are operating on their body when they face the signs of ageing. Lastly, it uses the French theory of déprise to question about the role of body in the process in which ageing persons are engaged to reorganize their life through a series of adjustments, renunciations, and reconversions.
