« De la cour de France aux petits métiers. Figures d’habits sous Henri III »

Abstract : Histories of costume have, ever since the 19th century, mainly drawn on the Gaignières collection in the BnF, in order to illustrate the figures of fashion at the French Court in Histories of costume have, ever since the 19th century, mainly drawn on the Gaignières collection in the BnF, in order to illustrate the figures of fashion at the French Court in the 16th century. The album, Habits de France (1581-1586) was often exploited for its illustrations of courtesans, making them emblematic of the curia under the reign of Henri III. This article places these illuminated costumed figures back into the visual vestimentary culture of the Renaissance. They are part of an iconographical genre then on the rise, destined to satisfy the curiosity of the Europeans for the diversity of the appearances of different peoples and different social environments. Put together by the collector, Gaignières, in an album of clothing devoted to France, the figures were extracted from an album amicorum similar to those produced especially by students in their peregrinations across Europe. Some drew their models from the contemporary printed albums of clothing and from the series of Cris de Paris (Parisian Trades). The album illustrates, through the diversity of the clothing, the range of Parisian society in the 1580s, from the court aristocracy to the minor trades, including the bourgeoisie, thanks to a combination of signs, compelling to the eyes of those who purchased and collected the figures. Within the volume, the aristocratic figures expressed their particular identity through the visual confrontation with the others.
