Abstract : Invited to respond to the debate about the controversial issue of the eighteenth “école d’été de didactique des mathématiques”, namely the use of singular or plural in the French term didactique(s), the author has set up a corpus from a large number of contributions to this debate, published in several recent books and journals. According to his analysis of this corpus, the author examines the conditions for a better implementation of the debate, so that it would be controversial from a scientific point of view, it means by its heuristic value and not only by the desire of controversy from some of the parties. He questions the way the issue is put in debate, the terms of this debate and the theoretical interest to continue to build such an issue.
