Abstract : This article aims at reporting words of secondary school pupils about paraphrase in the French class. They were collected during discussions intended to put in perspective an analysis of institutional speeches on paraphrase, the experiences of which are briefly reminded in the introduction. Pupils’ words on paraphrase are interesting because of the information they give on the way paraphrase is being forbidden in school. They confirm (but only partly) the two main hypotheses formulated before the discussions : on one hand, a real awareness by the pupils that paraphrase is forbidden ; and on the other hand, a certain conventionality of the definitions ; these two phenomena resulting from teaching.
