Les chiens de l’Epyllium Diomedis (v. 8-19). Quelques remarques sur la littérature cynégétique à l’époque hellénistique

Abstract : The beginning of the so-called Epyllium Diomedis (Epic. adesp., 2 Powell) gives an interesting list of different dogs composing a pack guarding Diomedes’ flocks in the Argive chôra. This pack which shares characteristics with hunting hounds may be linked with Diomedes’ cynegetic activities even if, based on realia, a hunting pack can not be used for guarding a flock. A detailed study of this list shows Nicander’s influence and explains some curiosities of Vergilius. At last, we are prone to think that the refinement of hellenized and dog-loving Egypt has a role in the preservation or even in the production of this original work.
