Abstract : This paper falls in the field of the pedagogy of teaching French as a Foreign Language. Its focus is the teaching of writing argumentative texts as an introduction to writing dissertations, a genre often required in French Universities. This article shows the choices made by the authors of FFL textbooks of the last 20 years; the corpus is composed of 15 textbooks published between 1984 and 2012. It shows the main stages of how writing, especially argumentation, is taught throughout the history of FFL methodology. Then, it focuses on how the units in textbooks based on the communicative approach and how the units in textbooks based on the action-oriented approach deign a frame for this argumentative genre.
