Résumé
This article examines the concept of “Renaissance”, which F. O. Matthiessen used in his 1941 foundational study, American Renaissance, to historicize a moment in American literature and signal its exceptional value. Various uses of the notion are here traced back to critical discourses of the 1920s to understand its fundamental ambiguities.
