Le Censeur européen : un journal industrieux et utile : Réflexions sur le statut de l’homme de lettres dans une société moderne et libérale

Abstract : The Journal Censeur Européen (1817-1819)was a laboratory for liberal writers sur as Augustin Thierry, Charles Dunoyer et Charles Comte. Their articles proves that the status of the "man of letters" was degraded after the French Revolution and the First Empire for he was considered as a parasite. This article tries and examines how the social status of the "man of letters" was degraded in the Censeur européen, how both the value of the imagination and of traditional liberal culture was questioned. This intellectual context explains some of Nodier's stances in La Fée aux miettes as he defends the value of free imagination.
