Brief description of the contents of the volume: At a global level, the growing attention to the problems of environmental degradation has determined the need to set up programs that provide directions for an ecological alternative and for a sustainable future. The energy problem has become above all the problem of alternative resources, and the use of solar and both innovative and traditional technologies, which allow energy saving on the one hand and better liveability on the other, has become the cultural and political strategy for the new millennium. Talking about an architecture more linked to multiple environmental problems means giving meaning to the concept of eco-compatible architecture, which cannot ignore a better awareness of energy problems. Facing the next few years in a responsible manner will mean involving the products of architecture and the parameters of planning in a new project ethic, in which the survival of the environment and man are a single and mandatory requirement. It is impossible to think of energy saving separated from all those factors that make architecture and human action closely linked to the environment and its renewable resources. "The environment is not understood as a neutral reality onto which to project ideas and cultural representations, but as a world imbricated in the very life of the various organisms that take root and anchor themselves within it. Individuals and the environment form, in this perspective, a inseparable couple. Given the way in which living, acting and ability are understood, even their context cannot be understood as a separate landscape, for example as a possible object of aesthetic contemplation, but rather as a scenario of tasks, as a field of both human and non-human practices and skills". Architecture alone cannot certainly be the advocate of an ecological change in human behavior but it could contribute significantly to the ideological re-foundation of the concept of liveability on this earth and to the generation of a new spatiality more closely linked to the environment.
